About Canukshuk Artworks
I’ve been stacking rocks on the shore of Lake Superior for the last number of months. I’ve found that the rocks have balance points you can feel. I’ve also found the higher the stack gets the less control you have—and you need to let the rocks find the balance point themselves.
— "Balance Point"
My experiences with building rock cairns evolved from a necessary healing journey into an outlet for the creative spirit. The Rockpeople taught me much about who I am in relationship to self, others, and the natural environment, as well as finding the balance point within. Capturing them with photographic images translates and preserves their mystic personas into something I can share with others.
The Inuit people of the Canadian Arctic inspired my inukshuk (more than two are referred to as "inuksuit") rock sculptures. I am also Canadian, or "Canuck," by birth and my sculptures were inadvertently referred to as Canukshuks by my friend Paul ‘Fly-boy’ Diedrich. With a slip of the tongue, Canukshuk Artworks was born.
Through Canukshuk Artworks I hope to share my journey "home" where home is simply being present in all of one’s moments…and where the gift of woundedness is the source of healing, and the mystery of life is found in its paradox.
Artist Statement
Rocks archetypically represent the enduring human soul and have been revered by indigenous people around the globe from the beginning of human history. They have served as way finders for the human experience, they are central to our participation in ritual and spiritual connection, and offer elements for our survival and connection with the earth.
My own journey with the rocks has been profound. The constructive and deconstructive creative forces within nature have imbued core truths and foundational teachings of non-attachment and presence. The Rockpeople of Chester Creek – in the tradition of the Inuit Inukshuks – have served to reveal the essence of the healing journey, reconnection of self to soul, and the mystery of Mother Earth when one simply listens to the rocks.
